We believe in offering the best dental implant options to those who need them, and we believe that prevention is better than cure.

While many causes for tooth loss are a result of accidents, many severe tooth problems caused by infection and gum disease can largely be avoided by the standard dental hygiene practices many of us learned as children.

If you are a parent or if you work in an environment where you can influence the adoption of good dental hygiene practices, join us in helping to promote National Children’s Health Month.

And remember: Dental Hygiene is just as important for the implant patient as it is for the patient with all natural teeth! Click here to learn more about dental health and hygiene.

I generally recommend tonsil removal for my patients for several reasons.

To improve their airway and decrease the incidence of Obstructive Sleep Apnea which is a silent killer. For you men who have neck sizes over 16 inches it is a real concern as well as for anyone who is more than their ideal weight.

To decrease your chances of oral cancer. Cancer can live and breed in the tonsils where it can be unseen for years.

We are very pro tonsil removal. A recent article just released from the SAGE Journal of Ear Nose and Throat confirms that in children the cardiovascular morbidity associated with Obstructive Sleep Apnea is potentially reversible with tonsil removal. This means lower blood pressure, a better pulse rate and better oxygenation. Something to keep in mind for your overall health and long life.

With the holidays behind us and the new year approaching, many of us have put away the Christmas list and have begun a new one… New Year’s Resolutions. According to USA.gov, the most popular New Year’s Resolutions in America are:

Drink Less Alcohol

Eat Healthy Food

Get a Better Education

Get a Better Job

Get Fit

Lose Weight

Manage Debt

Manage Stress

Quit Smoking

Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle

Save Money

Take a Trip

Volunteer to Help Others

I have to say that these are all excellent resolutions worthy of adoption! What peeks my interest as a dental professional, is how many of these resolutions if adopted would pose great benefits to one’s oral health as well.

Drink Less Alcohol

According to the Journal of the American Dental Association, “People with alcohol abuse problems have a higher incidence of periodontal disease, caries and potentially precancerous oral lesions, said researchers March 12 at the American Association for Dental Research meeting.”

Quit Smoking

In addition to the harm that smoking can cause in one’s lungs and overall health, smoking can also lead to gum disease, tooth loss, stained teeth and even mouth cancer.

Eat Healthy Food

The food you eat nourishes your body, which includes your teeth and your gums. Eating a diet rich in calcium, fruits and vegetables will help to improve the health of your mouth as well. In August we published a blog with a small list of Foods to Avoid for Healthy Teeth. You can find that by clicking on this link.

Other New Year’s Resolutions

Some other great new year’s resolutions to adopt for your oral health in 2013 could be:

Floss once a day.

Consider investing in an electric Sonicare toothbrush for a more thorough clean.

Schedule your dental cleaning and exam every 6 months.

Have an oral cancer screening done.

With all of that said… We wish you a very, very Happy New Year! Here’s to 2013 and all of the new joys and adventures it holds.

As you might imagine, there can be many reasons for a toothache. Some of the common reasons that you might feel pain in your teeth include:

A cavity

An abscessed tooth

Tooth decay

Result of grinding your teeth

Broken tooth

Infected gums

Malfunctioning dental work

Tooth pain can come in many forms, but generally it is either a constant throbbing, shooting pain in and around your teeth or pain in your jaw. If the pain has either very strong intensity, an obvious problem (i.e. malfunctioning dental work), or consists for 1-2 days it would be wise to set up an appointment with your dentist immediately. They will be able to diagnosis the problem and bring solutions to relieve the pain and resolve the problem.

There can be many reasons for a toothache, but thankfully, there are also many solutions. We wish you and your dental health the best!

The statistics are in your favor! The vast majority of dental implants never need to be replaced. When a dental implant is placed in the original bone, the success of this being a permanent solution for that tooth is 95%. The success rate for an implant that uses bone grafting is slightly less.

As with any dental procedure, the more you do to take care of your dental health post surgery will increase your success rate and will provide greater overall dental health.

Caring for your new teeth properly will include the following:

No Smoking – The success rate of implants are greater for a non-smoker than a smoker.

Regular Maintenance - Following all instructions given to you by your implant dentist post surgery will increase the longevity of your dental implants.

Regular Appointments – Your dentist will prepare you with your professional cleaning and check up schedule.

Dental implants are known to successful solution for those who are in need of replacing missing, broken or decayed teeth. So, how long do dental implants last? 95% of the time… Forever.

Are dental implants painful? We all know what it’s like when a tooth problem becomes so bad that it can no longer be ignored. Dental pain can be downright unbearable.

Don’t let your fear of the unknown discourage you from taking care of that “problem” tooth or teeth, or from that persistent, painful dental condition.

Dental Implants Result in a Pain Free Mouth!

Like any surgical procedure, there will be a level of discomfort or pain for anyone undergoing the surgery. However, the end result of dental implants will leave you grateful that you made the decision to correct the problem.
Not many of us make a fortune off our appearance, or possess the confidence of an A-List actor, but there is no doubt that our interaction with others depends heavily on how we think others view us.

While the most important aspect of any restorative procedure focuses on function, at Fitzgerald Dental Implant Center we use the best technology and techniques to match or surpass the function AND appearance of your original smile.

In the end, we will be happy to discuss your unique case and help you to make the decision and achieve the quality of life you associate with a “perfect” smile.

During your initial free consultation with our office, you may find that we recommend you undergo a bone grafting procedure. This isn’t the case for every patient, but for some patients who have low to no bone in the dental implant location, this will be necessary.

Bone grafting is done for two reasons: One is to create enough bone height/width, to place dental implants, secondly to fill out bone deterioration or depressions under the gums. Filling out the gums is done for cosmetic and gum contour reasons. Bone grafting increases the quality and quantity of bone available.

Bone grafting material can be either natural or artificial. The bone grafting material source can be from you, the patient, (autogenous), from a donor source (allograft) or artificial material, organic or bovine source (alloplastic). All three bone grafting sources are widely used. The trend is to rely more on human products for bone grafting versus bovine or artificial products. However, opening up an additional surgical site to retrieve the bone and getting enough bone is sometimes a reason to go with another option. Bovine and artificial products can be a bit more unpredictable than natural bone; however, whether you choose to use artificial or natural bone, all have been proven to be safe options.

If during your consultation we determine that bone grafting is necessary, we’ll gladly go over all the options with you in detail.
